Sun City is an unincorporated, census-designated place in Maricopa County, Arizona, located within the Phoenix metropolitan area and about 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. It was developed by the Del E. Webb Corporation and opened January 1, 1960, as a planned retirement community built on the site of the former ghost town of Marinette.

Portions of the greater Sun City area fall within the Peoria Unified School District and the Dysart Unified School District, which serve the surrounding communities. Getting around
Valley Metro provides bus service connecting Sun City to Peoria and the greater Phoenix metro area. One local route, Route 106 (the Peoria Avenue route), travels from 105th Avenue at Santa Fe in Sun City east to the Sunnyslope Transit Center. Valley Metro's system, which began operation in 1993, serves more than 24 communities across the Valley of the Sun, including Sun City, Peoria, and Phoenix.
Homes and housing
Sun City opened on January 1, 1960, with five home models, a shopping center, a recreation center, and a golf course. Housing in the community includes single-family homes as well as attached housing types such as garden apartments, duplexes, patio homes, and multi-level condos. Del Webb built homes in Sun City primarily between 1960 and 1970, with over 300 floor plans used across the community, and single-family homes generally ranging from about 946 to 2,137 square feet.

Sun City is served by the Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc., which operates eight recreation centers and eight golf courses, including the Lakes West, South, North, Riverview, Willowcreek, Lakes East, Quail Run, and Willowbrook golf courses. Facilities include the Duffeeland Dog Park, Viewpoint Lake, and the Sun Bowl Amphitheater, along with chartered clubs covering a range of interests.
