Surprise

Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, located in the northwest corner of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1938 and incorporated as a town in 1960, and had a population of 143,148 at the 2020 census.

Schools

Public schools in Surprise are served primarily by the Dysart Unified School District, which is headquartered at 15802 N Parkview Place in Surprise and encompasses 140 square miles, serving almost all of Surprise along with El Mirage, parts of Glendale and Youngtown, and portions of unincorporated Maricopa County. Parts of the area are also served by the Nadaburg Unified School District, based in Wittmann. Attendance boundaries and specific school assignments can be looked up through the districts directly or through NCES district and school search tools.

Getting around

Surprise is located about 25 miles from Phoenix. Arizona State Route 303 (Loop 303) runs through the city, and the city is working on improvements to the Loop 303/US 60/163rd Avenue corridor in northern Surprise in coordination with regional partners. Bell Road, a major east-west arterial that crosses the Agua Fria River, links Surprise with Phoenix and passes through the city on its way from Sun Valley Parkway to points east.

Homes and housing

Surprise was subdivided early on to build inexpensive houses for agricultural workers on a one-square-mile parcel of land, with only a few houses and a gas station present at that time. The city has since grown substantially, with North Surprise in particular described as one of the fastest-growing regions in Maricopa County, where tens of thousands of single- and multi-family homes have been developed.

Things to do

The Surprise Recreation Campus, built in 2002, includes Surprise Stadium (the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers), twelve baseball fields, and Mark Coronado Park, an 8-acre multipurpose field. The city maintains public parks including Asante Community Park, Dick McComb City Park, Marley Park, Surprise Community Park, Veramonte Park, and The Fields at Countryside. Other recreation facilities include the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex, the Surprise Aquatic Center, and Surprise Pickleball Courts, along with shopping areas such as Surprise Marketplace, Surprise Towne Center, and Village at Prasada.
